"Atlas At Last!" at Geppi's Entertainment Museum in March 2011 Special Exhibit Timed with Return of Characters after 36 Years
While some details are pending, the exhibition will include a display of all 72 Atlas-Seaboard comic books and comic magazines from their brief 1974-1975 run, many of the period fan and industry publications such as The Comic Reader, which covered the line, and the derivative titles that followed from other publishers after the line's demise. Also included in the exhibit will be an amazing selection of original Atlas comic art, featuring numerous covers (including unpublished pieces), sketches, color guides, advertising pieces and other material by such creators as Frank Thorne, Pablo Marcos, Larry Lieber, Al Milgrom, Dick Giordano, Mike Sekowsky, Sal Amendola, Ernie Colon, and others. The original Atlas-Seaboard line was launched by Marvel Comics founder Martin Goodman and his son, Charles Goodman, and featured many of the top creators of the day. The line included full color comic books and black and white magazines spanning a number of genres and styles. The new Atlas material on display will include The Grim Ghost #0 and Phoenix #0, which debuted at the New York Comic Con, as well as The Grim Ghost #1, Phoenix #1, and Wulf #1, which will be released March 2, 2011. Guest Curators J.C. Vaughn, Associate Publisher of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, and Mike Wilbur of Diamond International Galleries will coordinate the exhibition with GEM Executive Vice-President Melissa Bowersox, Associate Curator and Registrar Andrew Hershberger, a number of industry sources including Atlas CEO Jason Goodman and Arrden Entertainment Co-President Brendan Deneen. Additionally, Gemstone Publishing will offer a companion publication to the exhibit, a special one-shot issue of Comic Book Marketplace, in the January 2011 issue of Previews. It will go on sale March 2, 2011. "We're very excited about this exhibit of the original Atlas-Seaboard line, its related material, and the new Atlas line," said Bowersox. "There is so much comic character history out there, and GEM is the place to find it! The relaunch of the Atlas characters serves as a perfect springboard to investigate this brief period of that was full of potential and remains disproportionately influential with fans." The exhibit will be staged in GEM's vast comic room, which has received praise from patrons and the media alike since the facility opened in 2006. Further details will be available in coming weeks. Those interested in advertising in the special issue of Comic Book Marketplace may contact Vaughn at vjeff@gemstonepub.com. Geppi's Entertainment Museum is located in the historic Camden Yards sports complex at 301 W Camden Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, immediately across the street from the Baltimore Convention Center, right next to Oriole Park, and just a few blocks from the world famous Inner Harbor. The museum exhibits nearly 6,000 pop culture artifacts including comics, toys, dolls, games and memorabilia of every conceivable category. Journey from the late 1700s to the present day and revisit favorite characters like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Mickey Mouse, Barbie, G.I. Joe, and many more. GEM's present special exhibit, artist Devin Hannon's "ZombieNation," runs through December 31, 2010.
